Reasons To Believe:
How To Understand, Explain, and Defend the Catholic Faith
by best selling author Scott Hahn
This book unravels mysteries, corrects misunderstandings, and offers
thoughtful, straightforward responses to common objections about the
Catholic faith.
Bestselling author Scott Hahn, a convert to Catholicism, has experienced
the doubts that so often drive discussions about God and the Church. In the
years before his conversion, he was first a nonbeliever and then an
anti-Catholic clergyman. In REASONS TO BELIEVE, he explains the "how and
why" of the Catholic faith—drawing from Scripture, his own struggles and
those of other converts, as well as from everyday life and even natural
science. Hahn shows that reason and revelation, nature and the supernatural,
are not opposed to one another; rather they offer complementary evidence
that God exists. But He doesn't merely exist. He is someone, and He has a
personality, a personal style, that is discernible and knowable. Hahn leads
readers to see that God created the universe with a purpose and a form—a
form that can be found in the Book of Genesis and that is there when we view
the natural world through a microscope, through a telescope, or through our
contact lenses. At the heart of the book is Hahn's examination of the ten
"keys to the kingdom"—the characteristics of the Church clearly evident in
the Scriptures. As the story of creation discloses, the world is a house
that has a Father, a palace where the king is really present. God created
the cosmos to be a kingdom, and that kingdom is the universal Church, fully
revealed by Jesus Christ. Hardcover, 196
pages. (Item #88651) $ 22.95 |

Religious Literacy:
What Every American Needs
to Know--And Doesn't
by
Stephen Prothero
*Starred Review* The author of I^ American Jesus (2003) opens
this important book with a paradox. To wit, Americans are deeply religious
I^ and profoundly ignorant about religion; that is, one of the most
religious countries is also a nation of "religious illiterates." Prothero
calls religious illiteracy dangerous because religion is one of the greatest
forces for good--as well as evil--in the world. Nowadays, standing on shaky
religious ground can be literally a matter of life and death. To cite two
brief examples of America's religious illiteracy: only half of American
adults can name one of the four Gospels, and 10 percent of Americans believe
that Joan of Arc was Noah's wife. Prothero defines religious literacy--what
it is, and what it is not. He also discusses the two great religious
revivals in U.S. history, the Second Great Awakening of the nineteenth
century and the postwar revival of the 1940s and 1950s. He argues both the
constitutionality and the necessity of teaching--with an emphasis on
spreading knowledge, not inculcating values--about religion in public
schools and higher education. He suggests that every U.S. public high school
should require a course on the Bible and another on the religions of the
world. And he devotes an entire chapter to "a modest list" of a hundred or
so religious terms that he deems essential, from I^ Abraham to I^ Zionism,
to any American's religious knowledge. A must-read on its subject. June

De-Coding Mary Magdalene
Truth, Legend and Lies
by Amy Welborn
Recent best-sellers have popularized a historically and
spiritually false view of Mary Magdalene. A saint who has been revered
by the Church for centuries, Mary Magdalene's life and actions have been
exploited and distorted, her historical significance marginalized by
lies such as:
- Mary Magdalene was married to Jesus and bore his
child.
- Mary Magdalene is the "real" Holy Grail.
- The Gnostic gospels tell us the truth about Jesus
and Mary Magdalene that the Christian Church has suppressed.
- For centuries, Mary Magdalene was demeaned by
Christian tradition as nothing more than a prostitute.
Learn the truth -- not the fiction -- about the
extraordinary woman who was one of the earliest disciples of Jesus and a
powerful witness to his death and resurrection.
Amy Welborn, the award-winning author of the
international best-seller de-coding Da Vinci, exposes popular
myths and misperceptions about Mary Magdalene, and presents us with the
woman who has stirred the Christian imagination and inspired the

Evil
in Mirror Lake
by Fr. Leo Joseph Hayes
The Ancient Mystery
of Evil Revealed. The Terrorist Attack on America Explained! The Killings at Columbine
High School Defined! Is There a Kennedy Curse?
"...The answer given by others is that what seems
like chaos can conceal design. In a created universe, God should betray no trace of the
Omipotent Presence, since to do so would be to rob the created forces-me-of my
independence. This would turn me from the active pursuit of answers to being a mere
supllicant of God. And so it is in nature: God's language is mostly silence."
Father Leo Joseph Hayes answers the age-old question of
how a just God can allow the innocent to suffer. He explains the terrorist attack on
America with a "Why Me God" view.

her bones, and not the Last Supper cup?
- Is Opus Dei really what The Da Vinci Code says is it?
- What was Constantine's true role in early Christianity?
- Was Jesus human or divine or both?
- Was he married to Mary Magdalene?
- Do secret writings not in the Bible really contain truths about
Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and the "sacred feminine"?

The Da Vinci Hoax:
Exposing the Errors in the Da Vinci Code
by Carl Olson and Sandra Miesel
(Item #83706) $15.95
The Da Vinci Code,
Dan Brown’s best selling novel, purports to be more than fiction: it
claims to be based on fact and scholarly research. Brown wants his
readers to believe that he is revealing the long-concealed truth
about Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and early Christianity, a truth that he
says has been suppressed by the malevolent and conspiratorial forces
of the Catholic Church. The novel alleges that there has been
throughout history a secret group of true followers of a Gnostic
Jesus and his wife, Mary Magdalene, the true “Holy Grail”. Almost
everything most Christians and non-Christians think they know about
Jesus, according to Dan Brown, is completely wrong, the result of
Catholic propaganda designed to hide the truth from the world.
But are The Da Vinci Code’s claims fact or just plain
fiction? Is the novel well-researched as claimed? What is the truth
about Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and the early Church? Has the Catholic
Church distorted the real Jesus? Why is the novel so popular? What
about the anti-Catholic, anti-Christian agenda behind the novel?
Best selling author Carl Olson and journalist Sandra Miesel answer
these and other important questions. Their painstaking research into
The Da Vinci Code and its sources reveals some surprising
truths. No one who has read or heard about The Da Vinci Code
should miss this provocative and illuminating new book.
Praise for The Da Vinci Hoax
"Finally! Someone has taken the trouble to counter the absurdities
of The Da Vinci Code, and to confront all the anti-Christian
and anti-Catholic rhetoric that book has inspired. In writing their
own well-informed and well-argued text, Olson and Miesel have done a
real service, not just to Christians, but to anyone weary of
contemporary fads and foolishness. And unlike the original Code, The
Da Vinci Hoax is a delight to read."
--Philip Jenkins
Distinguished Professor of History and Religious Studies,
Pennsylvania State University
“In The Da Vinci Hoax, Carl Olson and Sandra Miesel bring
their considerable analytical powers to bear on the phenomenally
successful novel by Dan Brown. The Da Vinci Code is a
writhing nest of neo-Gnostic myths, blatant falsehoods, half-truths
and absurd suppositions presented as facts--indeed, it is one of the
most odious cases of revisionist history that have appeared during
the past two centuries.
Olson and Miesel dissect it carefully--break the code of the Code,
as it were--revealing not only Brown’s distortions of history but
the underlying malice in his ‘fictional’ attack on Christianity.
The Da Vinci Hoax is more than a refutation of a single book;
it is an antidote to a poisonous genre that is growing in
contemporary writing. This is a fascinating read and very good
medicine!”
--Michael O’Brien
Author, Father Elijah: An Apocalypse
“The title of this book by Carl Olson and Sandra Miesel says it all.
The authors of The Da Vinci Hoax deserve our gratitude for
exposing in considerable detail and with a sure touch the
fabrications of Dan Brown’s book. Theirs is the definitive
debunking.”
--Cardinal Francis George
Archbishop of Chicago
“I’ve painfully watched some usually-sensible university students
fall victim to The Da Vinci Code disease. I’ll enjoy having
this clearly-written antidote to prescribe.”
--Marvin Olasky
Professor, The University of Texas at Austin
Editor-in-chief, World Magazine
“Olsen and Miesel have done a superb and meticulous job of
dissecting the fraud which is The Da Vinci Code. Not only
Christians, but all fair –minded people owe them a debt of
gratitude.”
--James Hitchcock
Professor of History, St. Louis University |
